Description
Introduction For students entering a Bachelor of Nursing programme, the ultimate goal is to gain employment as a registered nurse. To practise in New Zealand, nurses are legally required to be on the register maintained by the Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ). In order to join this register, students graduating from nursing programmes in New Zealand must also pass the state final examinations. Since the transfer of nursing education from hospital training schools to tertiary education settings from 1973 to 1988 (Wilson, 2001), there has been debate regarding the appropriateness of state finals in nursing education (Wilkinson, 2007). Preparing students for an external examination to meet nursing registration requirements at the end of an undergraduate degree programme has implications for nursing education in the Aotearoa New Zealand context. This paper considers the impact of a state examination on teaching and learning in the current context of undergraduate nursing programmes.
